Let’s continue creating more awareness and happiness for our elderly communities worldwide!

30th anniversary of the International Day of Older Persons!

Every year on October 1, worldwide more awareness is raised for an often forgotten part of our society; our dear elders. In 1991 the United Nations established the International Day of Older Persons, meant to make younger demographics more aware of issues that many elderly suffer from, such as loneliness and immobility and even elder abuse.

This year’s (2021) theme ‘Digital Equity for All Ages’ brings awareness to the fact that many older people are struggling to keep up with the digital revolution worldwide, a gap that is becoming increasingly larger. The elderly have an especially great need for accessible, meaningful participation in our digital world. This does not only mean that they should be given the right assistance to learn how to use modern tools, but are also protected against the risks of cybercrime and false information.

Despite its rather sad reason, the International Day of Older Persons now serves as the perfect day to show appreciation for the contributions the elderly make to our lives and our society. Many people around the world choose to spend this special day with their parents or grandparents, or by volunteering in old age homes. Some fun and helpful activities to do for your local retirement homes include giving free workshops, reading stories, or baking delicious treats for a tea party!

Celebrate this special day with your family and local elderly community, or start planning fun activities for next year!
